‘Tis the Season for Giving

CEO Corner, The Virtual Life : Article

We’re fortunate at Virtual to be in a position to support many worthy causes in the Boston area. Over the past few years, we’ve given tens of thousands of dollars to charitable causes ranging from the Jimmy Fund, to supporting employees who participate in various charity walks and runs, to volunteering our time at Habitat for Humanity and more.

As CEO, I’ve been fortunate to have been the recipient of the thanks and good feelings that go along with that giving.

For the past two years, we’ve had a program that lets us share that feeling with our employees.

Our “Elf Project” runs for three weeks every year, when we randomly select some Elves to help spread the cheer. Employees who get “Elfed” come to their workstation to find an Elf, some decorations, and a $100 bill. We ask employees to use that money to help someone in need—any cause they believe in. All we ask is that when they do, they share their story at a staff meeting in December. It’s everyone’s favorite meeting of the year.

The results have been spectacular. We’ve had employees helping neighbors that were victims of fires. Employees buying toys for needy kids. Donations to homeless shelters for families. Employees donating to animal welfare groups. And, so much more.

We’re lucky to be in a position to be able to help the community around us. And luckier still to have employees that are honored to share in that responsibility.
